Kai Moohan-Shotan is a postgraduate M.Mus musician at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He has many years of experience teaching students of all age ranges and skill levels, as well as performing with soloists, ensembles and orchestras.

Kai has a Composition Degree, a Music Performance diploma and grade 8 piano & grade 6 music theory. Although Kai has a classical music background, he is a self-taught guitarist and is also a proficient bassist and saxophonist. Kai currently writes and performs in jazz and minimalist ensembles. Kai has also received a 6-month piano scholarship in London.

Above all things, Kai provides an enjoyable and stress-free learning environment that suits a student’s needs as a musician!

Teaching in Piano
Kai teaches piano to students of any age range or skill level. He can provide guidance through to ABRSM examinations, or a more personal approach, tailored to what you want to learn!

A typical lesson includes:

Teaching in Composition
As a composer at the Conservatoire, Kai is confident to teach any aspiring composer regardless of skill level or age.

A typical composition lesson includes:

  • In-depth review of your own work
  • Compositional techniques
  • Structure and tonality
  • The use of motif
  • How to balance repetition and variation
  • Melody writing
  • Instrumentation

Teaching in Music Theory
Kai offers tuition centred around the ABRSM music theory grades for any skill or age, aimed at improving your fundamental understanding of rhythm, harmony and melody. You will learn how to label notes and note intervals, write harmonies, hear and duplicate rhythms, and read key signatures.

Genre
Kai is able to teach all genres of music, whether it be classical, jazz, funk, pop, rock, minimalism, or folk. He specialises in classical music, but has an extensive knowledge of jazz as well.

First lesson
A first lesson can be a little intimidating, but Kai provides you with a laid-back introductory session for you to get to know one another!
